| John Hugo came to Los Angeles on a scholarship to the Lee Strasburg Theatre Institute, during which time he also became an apprentice at Theatre East, one of the oldest acting workshops in L.A., where coincidently, Jack Colvin was a member. Essentially untrained and virtually unknown in L.A. theatre, he was chosen by Colvin to co-star with him in what became a multi-award winning production of The Disenchanted. So began a life changing association with Jack Colvin, and through him, Michael Chekhov. There followed years of private sessions with Colvin, as well as participation in the many classes he conducted, where Hugo was often called on to demonstrate various elements of the Chekhov Technique. Over the course of the ensuing 25 years or so, Hugo has used nothing but the Chekhov Technique in roles on television, in film, and on the stage: from psychotics and cops to Shakespeare, Shaw, Wilde and Williams; from the Greeks to original and modern pieces; receiving several acting awards along the way. Favorite roles include Mercutio in Romeo & Juliet, the Fool & Edmund in King Lear, Jack in The Ruling Class, Edward in Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me, and Trigorin in The Seagull. He has been directed by and acted with Colvin in numerous productions: Hedda Gabler as Lövborg (starring Maaren Edvard), Hamlet as Hamlet, a critically acclaimed adaptation (Colvin’s) of Gorky’s The Lower Depths as the Thief, and most recently Two Outs Bottom of the Ninth by Vince McKewin, as the Catcher… to name a few. It was Hugo’s distinct privilege to be protégé of a man who was, by any measure, a Master at his craft. A founding member of the Michael Chekhov Studio, Hugo currently serves as Vice President, and along with Maaren Edvard, conducts weekend intensives and ongoing exercise and advanced scene study classes. |
